Description

The inevitable DoD bust of Medusa. Something I always wanted to try. And yes, painting those snakes was long and tedious. But I was pleasantly surprised by how they looked. So yeah, I'm pleased.

18x24 acrylic on canvas

Also I was pretty much inspired by this awesome piece [link] by :iconshayneothedead:. If you haven't already, check this guy's stuff out. It's awesome I highly recommend it.

And here is the rest of my DoD series

What is particularly interesting about this work is how you have taken a figure that is often thought of as being monstrous, and have presented her as an object of beauty. There is perhaps a comment here about how even the beautiful can be monstrous; that their are dire consequences to being too beautiful. This, in a way, is what the story of Medusa is all about. She start's out as a beautiful virgin priestess in the Temple of Athena where, one day, she is violated by the God Poseidon. Outraged, Athena curses her, because apparently she brought it on herself by being too beautiful (blaming the victim, go figure)

Interesting interpretation of Medusa. The time spent on the snakes was well worth it. The detail work gives them dimension and texture.I like the interesting iconography (tattoos) that you have given her. Is their a symbolism here? However, I find that the tattoos stand out to much. They do not look as though they are part of her. This could be due to the contrast between their colour and the colour of her skin.
